PGA Golfer Tiger Woods & Wife

It’s been a very interesting year in the sports world. There have been a few things I saw in 2009 that just made me think “what was they thinking?”. The list is really long and I won’t name everything that made us raise our eyebrows in the 2009 world of sports. I mean what was the PGA golfers thinking when they voted Tiger Woods as the Player of the Year? This was something that came after his car wreck, drug use, spousal abuse (which he received), and the extra women he was teeing up on the side from his beautiful wife. Clearly it would seem Tiger Woods would be the winner in 2009 for making the stupidest and most dumb mistakes possible. This great golfer went from big time hero to a complete zero and most think he’s done as a golfer and will never win another PGA tournament.

Get Ya Popcorn Ready - Terrell Owens

Why did the Dallas Cowboys decide to part ways with Terrell Owens? What was this great and talented NFL team thinking when they let one of the best wide receivers in football just walk away? America’s Team is now a very average football team and they have 5 losses on the season and will probably lose another one when they face the unbeaten New Orleans Saints on Saturday. It didn’t make much sense to see Terrell Owens going to Buffalo either and you could also ask what was he thinking by choosing Buffalo as his next NFL team.

New England Patriots Coach

Also in the NFL you can ask the New England Patriots what are they thinking by not throwing the football to Randy Moss? Quarterback Tom Brady isn’t as good as he’s hyped up to be and Randy Moss is the best weapon that team has ever had. Don’t believe the guys on TV and get caught up in the great legacy of Tom Brady. He’s been lucky to play with a great group of guys and now he plays with the best weapon in the NFL and they don’t throw him the ball.

Hedo Turkoglu

The sports team that made the worse mistake in sports in 2009 and no one is talking about this is the Orlando Magic. It was just 1 year ago when the Orlando Magic advanced in the Eastern Conference Playoffs to meet Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. One of the main pieces on that Orlando basketball team was Hedo Turkoglu and the Magic franchise threw him away like yesterday’s leftovers and went for a more athletic player in Vince Carter. I’m not knocking the talents of Vince Carter, but Turkoglu was the perfect guy for that Orlando attack in the half court offense. Everything slows down in the NBA Playoffs and Hedo Turkoglu is a good post season weapon and the Magic should have kept him and Dwight Howard together. They say if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. The Orlando Magic did lose in the 2009 NBA Finals to the Lakers, so perhaps they considered their team as broken? What was the Orlando Magic thinking to get rid of Hedo Turkoglu? Maybe it’s a little too early for me to be giving the Orlando Magic a hard time. They were predicted to win the Eastern Conference this year and currently they are 4th looking up at the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. If things stay this way, the Magic might have to defeat 2 of the 3 teams ahead of them now, if they plan to go back to the NBA Finals. I just don’t see this happening at this point in the season.

Falcons Mike Vick

If I had to give a 2nd place award in these sports blunders, I might have to go to a team that made their mistake a long time ago, but seen it come full-circle in 2009. The Atlanta Falcons made a horrible decision in cutting ties with the talented Michael Vick. He was one of the most dynamic players the NFL has ever seen and the Falcons did not support him or stand behind him; when things got rough for Mr. Vick. In their desire to keep a team full of “good boys“, they lost out on the production that Vick is giving to the Philadelphia Eagles right now. Michael Vick has did a great job in limited playing time this year and guess which team he would score his first NFL touchdown on, since coming back to the NFL? Yep, it was the Atlanta Falcons and Vick’s Eagles showed them up bad at home in the Georgia Dome. Vick not only rushed for a touchdown, but he also threw for one too, as the Eagles ran up the score on the Atlanta Falcons in their own building. What was the Atlanta Falcons thinking not to support Vick and distance their self as far away as possible? Perhaps the Atlanta Falcons learned from their mistake with Vick as they let Jonathan Babineaux play last Sunday and he was pulled over just 3 days earlier with 3 bags of marijuana in his sports utility vehicle. I guess owner Arthur Blank is a animal lover and supports players who smoke pot? Mr. Blank and the Dirty Birds have lost 7 games this year and Vick’s Eagles have only lost 4 games and look bound for the playoffs this year.

Did something in the sports world happen in 2009 and it left you scratching your head? Please let me know which players, coaches, teams, or their owners did something really dumb this past year. I want to see if we can form a list of blunders and examine which sports team made the poorest decision of all. I’m sure you can think of more than one thing, so feel free to list more than 1 sports blunder and we will see if we can help this sports organization recover from their bad decisions. I have the Orlando Magic and Hedo Turkoglu as the top sports blunder in 2009 and give the 2nd place award to Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons. I look forward to reading your replies and suggestions to this topic in sports and the question every sports fan wants to know. What was they thinking?
