Creating a Simple Life

Simple things are worth blogging about

All across America tomorrow, families everywhere will be celebrating Thanksgiving. A time to reflect back over the past year and remember the people and things we have to be thankful for. It was special when the Indians or Native Americans and the new settlers called the Pilgrims sat down on this special Thursday in late November, to eat such a wonderfully prepared dinner; which both sides took the time to prepare. The large feast back then continues to be fixed and ate today. I’m sure there was just as many calories  250 years ago, as they are today for Thanksgiving.

A variety of different foods have become staples for our Thanksgiving dinners. The most common food on Thanksgiving has to be the turkey and it is still my favorite food item to eat on this American holiday. The dressing with giblet gravy is one of my favorite side dishes to load up on my plate, next to the pieces of white turkey meat, I will cut out for my Thanksgiving dinner. I normally will add some fried okra and fresh green beans from the garden on my Thanksgiving plate too. Once I have all of this, it is important to grab a couple of homemade biscuits and the cranberry sauce. You have to include the cranberry sauce, for it to be a true Thanksgiving Dinner. The cranberry sauce is also very nutritional and provides nutrients we don’t often get through out the other parts of the year. Be sure to eat cranberry sauce with your first plate on Thanksgiving and then later on that evening or night; when you warm up another Thanksgiving plate to eat. Be sure to add cranberry sauce again. This fruity sauce is loaded with a lot of nutritional value and eating a variety of nutritional foods, is the best way for us to stay healthy. Since we don’t normally eat cranberry sauce at other times during the year, we should make an extra effort to eat cranberry sauce multiple times.

Watching the football games on television is just as traditional as the Thanksgiving Day Turkey in my opinion. I always love to watch the Detroit Lions the most. They usually have an earlier kick-off time than the Dallas Cowboys, who plays on Thanksgiving Day a lot. I believe this year, the 2nd NFL game will include the Dallas Cowboys against the New Orleans Saints. For those of you who normally root for the Cowboys to win on Thanksgiving, don’t look for them to win this year. The defending Super Bowl champs look better this year; than they did last year. I know their record might not be as impressive, but the Saints have been winning games with their core players out with injuries. They are slowly getting healthy and I believe most NFL football experts will have the Saints as 2 touchdown favorites on Thanksgiving. I will predict the Cowboys score 24 points on turkey day, but 21 of these 24 points will come in the 4th quarter; when the Saints enter the last quarter up 50+ points to 3. I’m calling for a huge turkey day blow out in the Big D of Dallas, Texas.

Before we see the Saints slaughter Jerry Jones and the over rated Cowboys, like they were the turkey on Thursday’s NFL afternoon game. We will have the opportunity to see the high-powered offense of Tom Brady’s Patriots from New England and the Detroit Lions. The local kids from Georgia Matthew Stafford, the Georgia Bulldog quarterback, will be looking deep for his Georgia Tech teammate Calvin Johnson in the “noon thirty” game Thursday. Mr Johnson the Wrambling Wreck from Georgia Tech, might just pose a few problems for that Patriots secondary. Matthew Stafford can probably throw the ball a good 17 or 18 yards deeper than Tom Brady and this is really saying something, since Tom Brady has one of the top 5 arms in the National Football League.

Possible 2010 Player of the Year  – #24 Darrelle Revis Jets

If you haven’t fallen asleep after the Lions upset the Patriots on Thanksgiving Day, you can still watch more NFL football. The entertaining Cincinnati Bengals will get a shot at one of the most surprising NFL teams this year. That Darrelle Revis dude from the Jets is a pretty good ball player. The Jets will be counting on Revis to take out any endzone party celebrations that Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Terrell Owens (also a Georgia receiver) plan to do on Thanksgiving Night. This game will be played on the NFL Network and you will have to have this channel on the cable or Dish Network channels. Watch this 8-2 Jets team try to secure a 2010 playoff position against the 2 -8 Bengals; which we can all see now that Carson Palmer was never as good as we thought he was.

The pigskin on Thanksgiving is not the only sports entertainment that will be on Thursday. The tradition begins with college and pro football from the NFL, but NBA fans have a nice treat Thanksgiving Night too. At 8:00 p.m. time in Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta-based TV Channel called TNT wil feature the Washington Wizards traveling south to face the Atlanta Hawks in Philips Arena on Thanksgiving. The day right before Halloween on Saturday, October 30th, these two teams face each other with Atlanta winning. This is when the Hawks would begin getting a little worse each time out. Even though this NBA team won their first 6 games, they were progressively getting worse each game, due to them trying to win games in the 4th quarter. They just go through the motions for the first 3 quarters and try to turn it on at the end.

They escaped the Wizards comeback plans on Halloween Eve, but don’t look for the Hawks to post any W’s in the win column on this night. The Hawks only have Josh Smith to try and soar with Javele McGee; who should have made the 2010 World Games team for Team USA. Our American team lacked in size and they had the chance to take McGee over to Turkey, but cut him from the roster, due to other players getting higher NBA salaries and popularity on their side. This McGee kid can play with anyone in the NBA and he will showcase his skills on Thanksgiving Day night in front of a national audience. The Hawks did a poor job with Blatche in their first meeting and seeing the Hawks lack of effort to make changes against the Minnesota Timnberwolves, after playing them for a 2nd time this year, means they will not adjust to stop Blatche this game on Thursday. Look for Blatche to score over 20+ points against the Atlanta Hawks on Thanksgiving night and the Wizards will spoil our Turkey Night Dinners in the ATL. I will go with a 102 to 84 score at Philips Arena Thanksgiving Night, with the Washington Wiz Kids winning this one. Be sure to grab the family and huddle around the TV and watch TNT on Thursday at 8 EST.

Everyone enjoy their families this year; while you stuff your faces with all of that great food. Please keep me and my family in your holidays prayers this year. I wish you all a lovely turkey day and be sure to get to bed early, for any holiday shoppers looking to brave the malls early Friday morning or on Black Friday. I wish you all a loving and safe Thanksgiving Day!

  • NBA Returns

Thanks for the guest post by Bradly Watkins

The best part about preseason NBA basketball is watching my team and getting excited about the coming year. With nothing really on the line, I can watch the team without fear, and still maintain hope that they are merely sandbagging it when the Lakers come into town and crush the team by 30 points. I mean, my team is just playing coy. The Lakers could win by sixty points and it won’t count, because it’s the preseason.

My favorite team is the Utah Jazz. Now you might think that I am a Mormon and pasty because I am a Jazz fan, and you’d be absolutely right. Then again, that doesn’t mean I don’t have an appreciation for jazz music and basketball. Nope, I love my Jazz and I love Jerry Sloan. I have Karl Malone posters on my wall, and my love for John Stockton borders on inappropriate, but thanks to my religious views I have kept my distance from him and his family for the time being. In any case, although the Jazz will be terrible this year, as Al Jefferson is vastly overrated, in the preseason I can leave my fingernails nice and un-chewed because I don’t have to worry like I do when it’s the playoffs, and believe me, Jazz fans are absolutely insane. You should hear me scream at my directstartv when the games are on, it is not pretty.

  • Educational Toys for Christmas

    Educational Toys

I can’t believe Christmas is on our doorsteps already! After this Thursday, will be the busiest shopping day of the year. Yep, it will be Black Friday and this is a day where retailers like to put everything on sale and this includes toys too! All kinds of good deals will be available to shoppers, who are brave enough to enter the stores on this first shopping day of the season. That first Friday after Thanksgiving Day is when parents like to get up early and rush to the malls, so they can find the best deals on toys for their kids. Instead of just buying the normal assortment of toys this year. Try to look for toys that are not only fun to play, but are educational too. It’s great when our kids can play a game and actually be learning too. We as parents can achieve this, if we will look for more educational toys in the stores this year. You can still buy the toys highest on your child’s Christmas List, but for the surprise toys you buy them, try to pick up a few of these educational board games and the educational video games for the computer.

If you don’t feel like waking up early this Friday, you can always come online and check to see if there is any toy bargains on the Internet. Most of the online websites, which have a good assortment of toys for kids, will usually have several educational toys and games you can buy. Online shopping for the kids or any other gifts you need this year is easy, if you have never shopped online before.

I hope everyone finds what they are looking for this Friday. Remember to show courtesy to your fellow shoppers while in the parking lots, store aisles, and in the cashier’s line too! Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!

  • The historic Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois is set to do something today, they haven’t done in 72 years. The north side’s favorite team the Chicago Cubs normally play baseball at this historical, athletic field in Northern Chicago. This will all change on Saturday, November 20th when the baseball lines and configurations get turned into a long 120 yard field for football. A football field is 100 yards long and each endzone or where players on offense seek to score a touchdown is 10 yards long each. So it isn’t an easy task to set a 120 yard long field into a park known and really made for baseball.

This historical match up will feature Northwestern University taking on the University of Illinois. The media has been following this Wrigley Field College Football Game all week and now the time is getting very close for the kick off. The last time Wrigley Field saw a college football game, was back in 1938. I’m sure a lot of sports bars in the Chicago area probably ask a local sports trivia question on their trivia nights. I could just hear a question asking what two college schools were the last two teams to play a college football game at Wrigley Field. For the last 72 years, the answer would have been St. Louis University and Depaul. That was so far back in history, that neither one of these colleges offer a football program any longer. Sports fans who like to play trivia in the local Chicago sports bars, will now have to know that Illinois and Northwestern will be the last college football game to be played at Wrigley Field, once this game gets played today.

The last I heard about the weather conditions in Chicago is good. I’m sure schedule makers had big concerns on what type of winter weather, might be in store for the Windy City, for this late November football game. Just last year, Wrigley Field created some excitement in the hockey world, by staging an outdoor NHL game; which featured the popular Detroit Red Wings and the hometown favorites Chicago Blackhawks. The defending Stanley Cup Champions the Red Wings from Detroit, would win this New Year’s Day Game in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. Fans were excited to see the Blackhawks get off to a quick start and take a 3 to 1 lead over the 2008 NHL Champion Red Wings. However, the Detroit hockey team would storm back and win this outdoor 2009 Winter Classic by a final score of 6 to 4.

2009 Outdoor Hockey Game – New Years Day @ Wrigley Field in Chicago

As for predictions, I will go with Northwestern to beat Illinois by a 21 point margin 31 to 10. The kick-off is about 2 hours away and I’m sure the sold-out crowd of 40,000+ fans is already in the parking lots doing the normal college tailgating thing. It should be interesting to watch this game and see how the players on the field hold up to the ground conditions in this moist and windy environment. I did hear the wind is blowing out today at Wrigley, so this means it will be a high scoring game! Good luck to the kickers in this game. I am positive they will need some help from Mother Nature, to survive the spiraling and hard-blowing winds; which often occur in Wrigley.

  • Most Internet users are learning how to navigate around the World Wide Web. It can seem a little scary at first, but once you learn a few tips and tricks here and there, you can locate just about anything online. If you get a craving for a certain food dish, but don’t know how to begin preparing it? There are numerous websites and web pages online; which are dedicated to food recipes. Maybe you just want to go out to eat at your favorite restaurant, but you always feel pressured to place your order quickly, after reading the menu. We can easily solve this problem, by looking up your favorite restaurant online and most will provide a menu of their food selections. Now you can take all the time you want at home, drooling over their tasty menu, so once you get to the restaurant, you can place your food order while you tell the server what you would like to drink.

Where do I begin the search? Any of the major search engines online would be a great place to start. Your current homepage now, probably offers a search box from one of the big online search engines. Don’t worry about Internet security, when you go to look for a free credit score or anything else which might require some personal information. In most cases, you will see a padlock on the upper or lower part of your browser; which will indicate this information is passing through a secured server. It feels good to be able to have access to your credit score number at any time of the day or night you want to look at this information.

A lot of people are conducting their finances and paying bills from their home computers in the 21st century. Once you get done paying the bills, you also have the ability to go shopping online with your extra cash for this week or the month. If you shop for a big item, like a brand new car, you may need to check your credit score. Consumers with a more favorable credit score, can usually get a lower interest rate, than someone whose credit is not that good. Before you get your hopes up, you have the luxury to check your digits first online, before you ever walk into the car dealership. If you find your number is too low for the auto companies, there is a lot of online ads for credit repair and credit score help. Instead of wasting your time inside a showroom at a dealership, you could be using that time to find out, how to improve your current score. The good news, it really is simple to find your credit score online and that is the main point I wanted to let you know about today.

  • Many will remember little Stephanie Tanner from the TV show Full House. This was a family television show; which featured 3 sisters, a dad, and two friends of the Dad, all living under one roof in San Francisco. The Dad was Bob Saget from America’s Funniest Home Videos or Danny Tanner on Full House. The brother-in-law to Danny Tanner was Jesse (John Stamos) and his best friend was Joey (Dave Coulier). The oldest sister was played by Candance Cameron (sister of actor Kirk Cameron from Growing Pains) and her name was D.J. Tanner. The youngest sister in the Tanner Family was Michelle Tanner and her character was played by the Olsen Twins, as most people know as Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen. The middle sister was Stephanie, who was played by Jodie Sweetin.

    Follow DoctorsTV on Twitter

What seemed like a happy family on TV, wasn’t really going that well for Jodie Sweetin or the middle daughter Stephanie Tanner. Just recently, Jodie would appear on the Doctors TV Show; which features Dr. Travis Stork, Dr. Lisa Masterson, Dr. Jim Sears, and Dr. Drew Ordon.

Jodie would go on to explain how her life drastically changed after the TV show Full House stopped taping in 1995. Her life would begin spiraling out of control with drugs and alcohol. She didn’t have a drug of choice. Jodie was game for anything and this would lead her down a very bad road of being addicted to alcohol, meth, and other illegal and prescription drugs.

At the age of 20, Jodie would get married to a Los Angeles police officer, who was also abusing drugs. She would divorce her 1st husband in 2006 and get married again in Las Vegas to a man she had only been dating for 2 months. She is currently divorced from her 2nd marriage, but did have a child in her 2nd marriage. It was the birth of her daughter Zoie in April of 2008 that made her want to clean up. She would learn that drugs was not a easy habit to stop and it took her until December of 2008, before she finally came clean. Next month, in December of 2010, will be the 2 year anniversary of her staying clean from drugs and alcohol.

The cute little Stephanie Tanner, who went through years and years of abusing drugs and alcohol, is now a lovely young lady at the age of 28. She seems to be on the right road and she credits her daughter for giving her the strength to stop using. Jodie Sweetin is not Lindsay Lohan, another famous child actress who is constantly getting in trouble with the law. Unfortunately for Lindsay Lohan, the California attorneys and judges continue to just give her slaps on the wrist, as she continues to this day with her addiction troubles. While it would be very easy for Jodie to go into hiding and making us forget about her troubles. She has took a stand and wants others to learn by her mistakes. So she has took the time to write a book about her battles with drugs and alcohol addiction.

Jodie Sweetin’s new book is about the problems and troubles that come with having a drug addiction or an alcohol addiction. The star of Full House even made time to appear on the Doctors television show, where she told everyone about her addictions and is making a sincere effort to reach others. Reading between the lines, I got the impression her main advice to addicts is don’t give up. No matter if you visit a drug rehab 2 or 3 times or if its 10 or 15 times. Just do whatever it takes to get your life back, so your family and friends can have the “old” you back. All of the troubles and miseries you might have now; will leave when the abusive patterns towards alcohol and drugs stop. Jodie’s new book is called UnSweetined. If you or someone you know has a problem with drugs or alcohol, this book written by Jodie Sweetin called Unsweetined might just hold the answers to some of the questions you have now.

I have had a lot of requests for information about the former child star from Full House and for information on her book. I hope this blog post will answer all the questions about which TV show she played in, her character on the TV show, and the details about her book on the personal side of Jodie Sweetin. She could have easily avoided the cameras and stayed away from coming into our living rooms with her worse and darkest days. Instead she stood up, took responsibility for her actions, and is now actively trying to help other teens and young people to avoid the mistakes she made in life. She will never be able to get those years on drugs and alcohol back, but at least she has a lot of good years ahead of her.

    Actress Lindsay Lohan

I’m afraid someone like Lindsay Lohan will not see her 28th birthday, like Jodie has seen, and if she doesn’t, there will be a lot of blame to pass around in the California legal system. Yes, it is up to the abuser to stop and this must come within their own self. If the courts continue to let her get off as easy as she does and her star power and fame has played a big part in the justice system’s decisions, she will never have the opportunity to write a book like Unsweetined. Or to use her celebrity fame to help others to stop using.

In most cases, it only takes 1 week to get through the worse parts of someone who suddenly stops taking a prescription drug, an illegal drug, or an alcoholic drink. Go ahead and sacrifice that 1 week now of your life. By taking the time to throw away 1 week of your life now, it can save you from throwing away years and years of your life later on. Stopping is not a day to day thing. It’s actually a hour to hour or a minute to minute thing. With each passing minute, your body will slowly rid it self of these drugs and alcohol and you will begin to feel better soon. To learn more and to hear the words from someone who knows; be sure to check out the Full House star’s book called UnSweetined by Jodie Sweetin, who played the middle sister Stephanie Tanner.

  • Shaq and the Celtics

I appreciate the guest post, Rodrigo Coffey

The Boston Celtics are my all time favorite basketball team. I bleed green and even have a Celtic Pride tattoo on my forearm that shows my love for the Boston Celtics basketball team. Me and my wife were able to watch Preseason NBA Basketball on satellite TV from satelite.com and had some concerns about the way the Celtics played.

The Boston Celtics will be a very dominate team this year and they actually stand a good chance of winning the Atlantic Coast conference, but we were concerned because they seemed to be wanting to have the team revolve around Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq has normally been a very explosive player, who could dominate almost any basketball court, but he is beginning to age and injuries are becoming more common.

If a serious injury is to occur which is very likely, then Shaq could be sidelined for most of the season. If Shaq is unable to play then the team needs to focus on all their other players. One of the problems is that if Shaq is inured and then late in the season comes back to start, he may mess up the chemistry that the other players have made.

I hope Shaq is able to play without any injuries but in my heart I feel he will have either multiple minor injuries or one big injury. Shaq is getting old, especially by NBA standard but he can still have good season. I hope his play will emphasize the athletic abilities of the other players and not revolve simply around him.

  • The Joys of Fresh Flowers

I use to deliver flowers for a living. I can tell you first-hand that people love to get flowers. Especially when you deliver them a nice floral pattern of fresh flowers in a vase. I believe the fresh flowers is what my unexpectected customers enjoyed the most. You can brighten someone’s day up by giving them flowers. If you don’t normally send flowers to your spouse. You can really surprise them, by sending fresh flowers on a day they are not expecting anything. Forget those special days and holidays for sending flowers. Just an ordinary day of the week, where you think your spouse might be having a hard time. You can really give them a boost and a big surprise, if you will order them some flowers; which can be delivered to them at work. The women really like to get flowers, when they are at work and can show it to all of their co-workers. Be sure you brighten up someone’s day and send them some nice, fresh flowers at work. They will remember the flowers, longer than any other gifts you send them on a birthday or any other special holiday celebration.

  • Gone with the Record Player

Remember the record player? What seems like an invention that was around in some other life, is really something that is not that far removed from society. I’m still in my 30′s and I remember the record player very well. It seems over time we forget certain things and pretty soon they are gone forever.

The Kool Aid Man at one time was a popular figure in this country. A few kids on a hot day screaming for the Kool Aid Man and watching him bust through a wall to deliver some cold Kool-Aid has been lost in history. I don’t see the Kool-Aid Man anymore. He seems to have disappeared with the record player.

Even Jimny Cricket is no where to be found in this new 21st century generation. A cartoon character like Jimny Cricket was built to be here for many years, but yet he has disappeared with many other American icons, we can no longer find in our day to day society.

Television programs are famous for being here one minute and then gone the next. I can remember a TV show called St. Elsewhere that use to be popular. I never did watch it much or even like it, but others did. I wonder where the fans of St. Elsewhere have gone? Do the fans of this TV show even remember they use to be fans of St. Elsewhere? I know Hill Street Blues will be remembered, thanks to the catchy music the show came on with each week. If a television program doesn’t have a catchy theme song or music, it may just get lost with the record player too.

Sports athletes come and go too. Remember a king that use to play in Cleveland? Where did this resident of Ohio go and why did he abandon his home state? So many things change places these days or become yesterday’s news too fast. Our favorite sports heroes are no exception and they seem to light up the stage for the shortest of times and soon the wind picks them up and just blows them away.

It all started with us forgetting about the record player. If we can remember the record player use to exist in our world, we can remember a lot of other things we use to love in this life. It wasn’t that long ago when the record player was the most popular thing in our household. Now it has been replaced by technology and who knows what inventions will replace the things we love so much today. It’s only a matter of time, until some of these new-age inventions get picked up with the wind and become as lost and forgotten about, as the record player we use to love so much.

I don’t like doing sit-ups, because I do get very soar in the mid-section of my body. Do you have a exercise you don’t like to do? • I Hope My Insurance is Fair Priced

I have kept all of my insurance plans intact for a long time now, I can’t remember when my last insurance quote was. I have been happy with most of my insurance prices, I have to pay on my different insurance plans. I know my auto insurance continues to get lower. Since I have not had any speeding tickets and have avoided the fender benders (knock on wood). Do you often check around with different insurance companies, to see if you’re paying the lowest prices possible? I know most of us just don’t have time to check for the lowest rates or get a new insurance quote. I hope I am paying the best prices now, but without checking, I don’t know this for sure. This is where trust comes in and it is important to trust your insurance carrier. No one wants to over pay for insurance. We have a variety of life insurance, auto insurance, and home insurances we have to pay each month, quarter, or yearly. I will have to slow down and do a check up on the amount of money, I am spending on insurance each year. To see if a better rate or premium exists in today’s insurance markets.
