I was looking at the top 10 searches at Yahoo and noticed that “pumpkin carving patterns” is the number 1 thing being searched right now. I don’t have any cool pumpkin patterns to give you, but I would like to know about your pumpkin carving traditions at your house. Is there any special process on buying your pumpkin for Halloween? It looks like a fun trip for the whole family; if you go to a pumpkin farm to buy your own special pumpkin. Or is the pumpkins in the supermarket just as good?

As much as I love Halloween and all the things associated with it, like getting candy, dressing up in costumes, and watching scary movies on TV, I have never carved a pumpkin before. I’m not a good artist, so I know my jack-o-lantern would not turn out good, but would still like to do it one day. I would need some pumpkin carving tips, because I wouldn’t know where to start.

I know the kids would have a good time carving up a pumpkin for Halloween. This can be a great family activity that everyone would have a good time doing and really pumpkins don’t cost that much. A cheap pumpkin would be just fine for the younger folks.

Pumpkin Carving Patterns

Do you see a pumpkin carving pattern in this picture that you like? Someone is very talented with their carving skills to make these pumpkins look so awesome. I’m amazed at how people can create pumpkin designs like the ones you see in this picture. Which pumpkin pattern do you like the best? I like the 4th one from the left on the 1st row (cat with witches hat). I think that one is pretty cool and if you go to the 2nd row in the picture, I like the 2nd one from the left (Frankenstein design). It looks like a kid Frankenstein and it’s a very creative pumpkin design. Just the ability to spell words on some of these pumpkins takes a lot of talent. I think the words look good and it probably takes some time to get the letters just right on the pumpkins that spell words.

Do you plan to carve out a pumpkin for this year? We don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters at my house, but the people that live in neighborhoods, should have a carved-out pumpkin sitting on the porch with a candle inside. As the flame twinkles up and down in the Halloween night, it seems the fire gives life to these pumpkins. If you don’t put a candle in your pumpkin; then it does take away from the personality of your pumpkin. If your going to take the time to carve-in a nice design, you might as well throw a candle inside to give it that finishing touch.

Halloween will be here next Saturday, so this is really the last weekend to make a trip to the pumpkin farm. Load up the kids sometime this weekend and go find your family’s special pumpkin. When you get home, get everyone involved with the carving and see which family member does the best with their pumpkin. Don’t forget to buy a few candles, so you can give your pumpkin a bit of life. If there was ever two things that went together like peanut butter and jelly, I guess you would have to say Jack Nicholson and the Los Angeles Lakers are like two peas in a pod. Not often do I think about Jack and not think about the guys out in L.A. that sport the purple and gold on the hardwood. Usually when I think of the Lakers or see them playing basketball on TV, it doesn’t take long after my Kobe Bryant thoughts to think about their biggest fan. Jack Nicholson is the biggest Lakers fan there is and he is probably the biggest celebrity sports fan in the world. As popular as he is as a movie star with big movies like Easy Rider, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Batman; we also see Jack as a huge NBA fan. I actually wasn’t that familiar with Jack Nicholson movies when I was younger and I knew him as a court side fan of the Los Angeles Lakers first. I knew he was important, but really wasn’t sure why the cameras would always point toward him.

It didn’t take me too long to know who Jack was and what he meant to Hollywood. I was flipping through channels late one night about 20 years ago and saw that a movie was about to come on. It was on TBS or TNT and there really wasn’t anything on TV that I wanted to see that night. Since this movie was just starting (because I hate watching a movie halfway in) I thought I would just leave it on this channel and try to get interested in this movie. The name of the movie was The Shining and I thought it was the greatest. I was glad that I decided to watch it and this is a really good movie. After I saw that the guy from the Lakers game was in it; it actually made me want to watch it more and try to learn why he was so famous. I’m not really sure what people consider as the best Jack Nicholson movie, but I would have to say The Shining from 1980 was the best movie he has ever done. Now he has a long list of good movies and I like them too, I just thought this movie had that little extra and there isn’t no one who could have played this role better than Jack Nicholson.

Have you ever seen The Shining before? This is a must-see picture if you haven’t been lucky enough to find it showing on TV. I really haven’t seen it come on television lately and you may need to order it online. The movie is currently available at Buy.com and they do have it in DVD format. Unless you get lucky and find one on sale at a flea market or yard sale; your best bet is probably to order the movie online. Even though this movie is about 30 years old, it is still a work of art in 2009. I’m sure it will entertain movie watchers as much now as it did back in 1980.

This year since we will not be with my parents they just asked for something simple and something that contains pictures. Since they are only able to visit with the kids 1-2 times per year they are always asking for recent pictures. Thanks to digital photography we have been able to share photos almost instantly with them. We are going to be creating a 12 month calendar of the kids and sending that out to Grandma and Grandpa so that they have them available all throughout the year.

It continues to be a system of much controversy in college football with their ranking system. The college football rankings have been a failure for the last 10 years or more and nothing has been changed this year to help it. A big reason why is money. This has nothing to do with a playoff system or the money involved in the bowl games. It’s the money that outside sponsors give these colleges and the NCAA does everything in their power to protect these rich schools. The current system would actually work if everyone would use it properly, but the favoritism to certain teams and football conferences causes us to have teams like Boise State number 5 in the country and the USC Trojans number 7 in the country. How does a team lose to a team that didn’t win 1 game last year and still hold a top 10 position? That’s very easy to explain. The USC football program receives more money than any other school and this money gets them undeserving rankings each year.

The national media doesn’t help and they keep the flames burning strong in Southern California. They can’t understand a team like Florida State that gets beat by a small Florida school, but yet destroys an over ranked BYU team. Yes, the Florida State Seminoles have played in 3 tough games this year and lost 2 of those. All 3 of these games were teams from the state of Florida and the talent level is so much higher in the South compared to the colleges in the West. The USC Trojans would not even be a 500 team in the ACC or SEC. They struggle against the weak PAC 10 teams and blow out a few of their weak opponents. Only quality win this year is against Ohio State and they get ranked too high each year. This is the same Ohio State team that almost went to overtime with Navy this year.

The good news is that the hottest high school players in the country are avoiding USC right now and advisers don’t like the USC future. It’s possible stiff penalties may be handed down soon, since USC got caught giving money to Reggie Bush and will likely miss future bowl games. The lack of recruits will create a more level playing field in the PAC 10 and pretty soon USC will just be a 500 team in a weak football conference. Too bad we don’t get to see ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreet warn the young high school players about this and the dreary futures they may have if they select to make USC their college choice. College players need the bowl games for exposure and the launching pad to a career of playing football games on Sunday. Why risk choosing USC; when you can select from all the other great colleges east of the Mississippi River.

So the mystery continues why we see the rankings so screwed up right now. If the NCAA would take the proper steps to correct the bias votes in college football, we could all see the true standings in college football. This is the list of the true standings in college football. It gets a little tricky when you go past 20 teams, so I chose several schools that could have that 25th ranking in the country. I would love to see some teams listed at 25 compete against each other.

BYU .vs. Arkansas

Now that would be a fair competition and some evenly matched teams in this scenario. The current rankings would have 2 top 10 teams going against lesser opponents and the number 19 team BYU playing against a team that isn’t even ranked. The mystery remains in college football rankings, but the real fans of college football know who the best teams really are and why some teams are ranked so high.

I really love this time of the year as the weather begins to turn colder. We aren’t use to the cold air at first, so staying at home under a warm blanket is a nice treat for someone that has to get out in the winter time. It’s a good thing we have plenty of sports to watch on TV during the fall and winter seasons. We get to watch baseball wind down and the football season has already started and it won’t be much longer for hockey and basketball to start their games on television. If you don’t like sports; then I’m sure you would like to curl up to some good movies this winter. Now is a good time to re-watch all those movies we have in our tv stands and catch up on the new shows coming this fall. All the new episodes of our favorite TV shows come on in the fall and new television programs make their way into our living rooms; during this time of the year. The fall schedule looks really good for TV right now. I’m excited to see some of these new shows. Between the new TV programs and my favorite sports teams in action, I don’t have to go outside and can stay indoors and watch plenty of television.

Tonight is the opening of the new stadium just outside of Dallas, Texas. The owner of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones spared no expense when it came to building this new football stadium for his team and all those Cowboy football fans. The world’s largest TV or projection monitor sits high above the field and this was the center of controversy in the preseason football games in Dallas. The other team’s kickers have been kicking footballs that have hit the huge TV monitor that sits above the 50 yard line. The NFL League did ask Jerry Jones to raise the big screen up another 10 feet, but he refused to do so. Many think he refused because it is impossible to move the huge monitor in any way.

The new Dallas Football Stadium will hold over 100,000 football fans. It is expected there will be about 103,000 for tonight’s first game in the new stadium. If that many fans turn out to see the Dallas Cowboys play at home for the first time this year, they will be a part of history. This is because no other professional football games have ever had that many fans to see their game. Not even a previous Super Bowl event has ever seen 100,000 fans attend and it would appear that history will be made in Dallas, Texas tonight.

The Cowboys won’t have an easy opponent when they break-in their new football stadium. They will have Eli Manning and the New York Giants as the first opponents in the new Cowboy stadium. I’m sure Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys would have liked to get an easier opponent with their first game, but the fans should really make some noise if Dallas does well in week 2 of the NFL season. The NY Giants are a good football team and there aren’t too many NFL teams that could beat them. The Dallas Cowboys do have the talent to match up to anyone in the National Football League, but it remains to be seen if they will get a win on their first night in the new stadium.

 

One of the most popular video games over the last couple of years has been Guitar Hero. This isn’t just a video game that kids love, but the adults love playing Guitar Hero too. There have been several different editions to this popular video game. One of the latest editions features the group Metallicaand I have always been a big fan of Metallica. Normally I think about their drums as the main instrument in this hard rock band from the 1980′s and 1990′s. Now you and all of the other Metallica fans can give their best musical performances on the Guitar Hero Metallica. This game features over 20 guest acts and I’m sure it contains most of the popular Metallica songs too.

All of these Guitar Hero video games are well-liked and it might not be available for too much longer. Especially when it’s been marked down to a cheap price and it’s not often you find any Guitar Hero games on sale. I think this game would be a great piece to add to any one’s Metallica collection.

Those are the ones that come to my mind first when I think about all of the great songs they have did over the years. I have many good memories of the card playing days of the past. We could play some junk when it came to me and my friends getting together and playing poker. Well it’s time for another year of college football and before the first games are even played the college rankings are screwed up. You don’t have to look hard to see the mistakes in this year’s preseason rankings for college football. The Trojans from USC who get ranked higher than their talent ever lives up to is once again sporting a nice ranking and why? The USC Trojan football team lost their starting QB and several other key pieces. It would appear on paper that their 2009 college season is on very shaky ground and a lot of questions to answer out there in Southern California.

The people running the college polls don’t see a problem with USC and for some reason both polls have these guys ranked as the 4th best team in the country. It just gets crazier every year and the college ranking system does work well for all the other teams in college football, but the favoritism it shows USC each year is ridiculous.

Let’s compare the Georgia Bulldogs to the USC Trojans. Both teams are losing key players and their starting QB for the upcoming season. Georgia was ranked 1st in the preseason polls last year and USC was ranked 3rd. The Bulldogs have slipped to 13th in both polls and this is a fair ranking for them in my opinion. USC only is dropping 1 spot to the 4th best team in college football! USC is going to have a brand new QB who is very young and even the guy they wanted to start for them this year isn’t going to be able to. They are now naming their 2nd string QB who is a freshman as their starting quarterback this year. While the Georgia Bulldogs will have a new QB at the helm, he is a senior quarterback and this alone should have the Georgia Bulldogs ranked higher than the USC Trojans.

 Joe Cox will be leading the Bulldog team into a tough schedule this year. They open on the road against Oklahoma State who are ranked 9th in the country. As always the Georgia Bulldogs will have to face a tough SEC schedule and their team will be tested to the max this year.

The Trojans get their usual weak teams from the PAC 10 to play against and don’t really try to schedule any tough non-conference games. This is because they know they will be ranked high and no need to risk losing to the teams that are better than them. The USC Trojans are not a top 10 team and they have not been a top 20 team in college football for the last few years. Everyone thinks they are good because they play in big bowl games each year, but they get there by having an unfair ranking and playing against weak teams. USC starts their schedule playing San Jose State and I’m sure they can win this game.

The Georgia Bulldogs lost their top ranking last year by playing against teams that were viewed as weak, but they kept winning. This year we should see the winner of the Oklahoma State and Georgia Game go ahead of the USC team who is almost guaranteed to drop by playing a nobody in the first week. This is how the ranking system worked last year, so let’s hold these people responsible and make sure they do drop the USC Trojans after week 1 in college football.

On September 12 the guys from Southern California travel east to play the Ohio State Buckeyes who are ranked 6th in the country. Now the 2nd most over ranked team is Ohio State and each school feeds off their high preseason rankings and the winner between them. Ohio State doesn’t play against nobody either and this shows up in the Championship Games when they get blown out by the Southern Schools that have the best college football talent in the country. They will be 3 more ranked teams on USC’s schedule this year and none of them are in the top 10. All 3 of these schools are only ranked high in the preseason rankings, so it helps USC with the computers.

23 Notre Dame (Lost 6 Games Last Year)

12 California (Lost 4 Games Last Year)

16 Oregon (Lost 3 Games Last Year)

As you can see a 6 loss team from a year ago doesn’t deserve a 23rd ranking like Notre Dame is getting. Just another example of more favoritism in college football. Oregon only loses 3 games and California goes ahead of them in this year’s rankings. I guess California is bringing back a lot of good starters from a year ago.

The Georgia Bulldogs loses 3 games last year and all to ranked teams. They lost to the number 5 team Florida Gators, the number 8 team Alabama Crimson Tide, and to their in-state rivals Georgia Tech who was ranked 18th in the country last year. This year Georgia will play the number 1 ranked Florida Gators, number 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys, number 11 LSU Tigers, and the 15th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. If you add up the 4 ranked teams Georgia will play this year by their ranking, you would come up with 36. If you did the same for the USC Trojans you would get 54! Notre Dame and Oregon alone make up a combined ranking of 39 and Georgia’s combined 4 only goes up to 36! When you factor in the ranked teams on the schedule and the tough competition that is in the SEC compared to the PAC 10; then the Georgia Bulldogs have a much harder trip to the Championship Game than USC does. Yet, if each team only loses 1 game this year, you will still see USC ranked ahead of them. Just like you see now with their 9 spots they have ahead of Georgia on the college polls; before the season has even started.

Let’s get real in college football and rank these teams fair. It just spoils the system and college football when you have USC getting ranked much higher than they deserve. USC is not even a top 25 team and they should be unranked at this point in the season. I’m sure once again the bias guys from ESPN will do specials on their team, so they keep the USC brand and football team streaming into the homes of America.

The economy seems to be picking back up a bit and people are starting to spend more money on entertainment again. You may notice this when you try to get tickets for a hot show or a sporting event for your favorite team. The people that put on and host these events only have so much room in their venues, that everyone doesn’t always get a ticket. When you know that the ticket is going to be hard to find or you want to see something everyone else does too; then your best bet may be online. Sometimes you can find companies or individuals that will sell you a ticket to a show that has already sold out to the public.

Dora the Explorer Tickets or Jersey Boys Tickets are a couple of shows that you would expect the tickets to be hard to find. Most of us would start making plans immediately, if we knew one of these events was coming to our local area and we wanted good seats for it. Popular shows like these always sell out or you get bad seats if you wait until the day of the show. Anyone that has ever bought tickets online or at a ticket agency know that people will do whatever it takes to get a ticket to a show that will sell out. We see these stories on the news all the time when someone has camped out all night long, so they could get a good seat. I have arrived 2 hours early before tickets were going to go on sale for a concert I wanted to see. I was 3rd in line and it didn’t feel too good when the store decided to draw numbers to see which people got to buy tickets first. Luckily I met someone in line that got 1st spot in the line-up and they bought 2 tickets for me.

If you do miss your chance to buy a ticket when it first goes on sale and the event does sell out; you can still search online for people that will sell you the tickets. You may have to pay slightly higher in some cases, but don’t think it’s always hundreds more because the event is sold out. Some businesses or people make a marginal profit for re-selling their tickets back to you. You may not want to take chances on the really big events and try to show up the day the tickets do go on sale for them. A special holiday event like the Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets might not be so easy to find online. Sometimes you do have to make an effort to get in those really long lines, but even if you miss an event like this, I’m sure someone out there will have an extra pair of tickets that can be bought for the right price.

 

I’m a big fan of any movie that is based on a true story. It seems the crime movies like Goodfellas, Casino, and the ones on Al Capone are a bit more intense than some of your other true story movies. I will always sit down to a movie based on John Dillenger and I love the 1967 Bonnie and Clyde movie that rarely comes on television. I may just have to buy Bonnie and Clyde at Buy.com and add it to my movie collection.

All of these crime movies are real life stories and people really did lose their life to these criminals that we view as icons or heroes now. I guess we can blame Hollywood for this, because they are the ones that have us rooting for these bad guys on screen. I don’t know of anyone that is rooting for the police (good guys) to catch these criminals on the run.

I do think one fascination we have with them is money. Most of these legendary bandits got their hands on money and lots of it! They did very little work to earn it. In most cases these men and women were very brave, but never did the physical labor it would take to earn this much money back then. Even today money is hard to come by and I think we all think about robbing a bank or a casino to get our hands on some fast cash. I know one good job at a bank would help me out with my bills. It would be nice to go shopping and buy anything you wanted, instead of having to find a sale to shop for. The power that comes from money is what gave these bank robbers and thieves the ability to form partnerships, gangs, and even corrupt a city if you think about Al Capone’s power. This power spills on to us and we root for them to get away with it and not get caught. After all, we would want a few cheerleaders and helpers if we were running from the law and trying to hide a huge stash of cash.

Now I like the non crime movies that are based on true stories too. I am a true story junkie when it comes to movies. I really like them all and they are very few bad movies out there that are based on true stories. It just seems like the ones that involve a crime are the most interesting and obviously I’m not alone; since Hollywood mainly goes this route on their true story movies.

Currently there is some high profile names involved in crimes making the news headlines today. I can’t wait to see some of these future movies and see how they come out on the big screen. One of the most recent true story movies was the one based on Natalie Holloway and her trip to Aruba. That is a pretty good movie, but this is one movie where you are rooting for the good guys (police) to catch the bad guys. I think we are all rooting and praying that people like Natalie Holloway and Jon Bonet Ramsey get the justice they deserve. We could use more true story movies like the Elizabeth Smart case, that did have a happy ending.

There certainly hasn’t been a shortage of Michael Vick talk lately as everyone was trying to guess which NFL team he would land on next. The Michael Vick sweepstakes is now officially over and he has a new home. The fastest quarterback ever in the NFL will no longer be suiting up in his number 7 uniform that he wore for the Atlanta Falcons. He may get his same number, but now the jersey will have a lot of green in it.

 

Mr. Vick didn’t change his feathers much, but he has replaced Falcon feathers for the Eagles feathers. Michael Vick has agreed to a new two year deal that will have him suiting up on Sundays in a Philly uniform. It’s not clear why the Eagles won his services, since they do have 2 other solid quarterbacks on their roster right now. From Vick’s perspective, he may have wanted a team that had the Atlanta Falcons on their schedule this year and the Philadelphia Eagles will travel to the Georgia Dome to play the Atlanta Falcons on December 6. That should be one hot ticket in Hotlanta as Vick comes home to play his former team.

I think this is a good move for the Eagles or any other NFL team that wanted his services. A two year lay off may present some rust for Vick, but he’s still better than most of the players in the league, even if he has slowed down. It shouldn’t take him too long to get back into game shape and I wouldn’t even be surprised to see him starting in week 12 when they do face the Atlanta Falcons.
