The shark attacks that keep making the news is a result of them coming closer to our shorelines. Hello all college math students! I’m glad you found me. I was once in your shoes too. Where is the search taking you today? Are you looking for linear maps? Maybe you want linear matrices? Even though these chocolate chip cookies look tasty and now I am craving cookies; this isn’t exactly the right “cookie” I was referring to. I was curious to why the smartest people in the world, you know the ones that created our computers and got us on the World Wide Web, would call a tracking tool a cookie? Wasn’t there any better names available? If you know how our computer cookies got their name or why they are called cookie, please reply back and share your stories with me. I would like to know more about cookies and how they got their name. Also, if you have a good chocolate chip cookie recipe, please reply back and share that with me too!

I did a little research online and seen where a Netscape employee may have had something to do with the naming of computer cookies. His name was Lou Montulli and it was his idea to take the “magic cookie“; which was a package of information for computers and in existence already, and apply it to web communications. He was playing around with this in 1994 and since it was basically the same technology of the magic cookie, it appears Lou would just call it a cookie, when it came to using it with the Internet.

Even though people like Lou Montulli and others were playing around with cookies in 1994, it would take a couple of years later, before we (the innocent public) would learn about them. On February 12, 1996 the Financial Times would publish an article on cookies and it was this article that alerted most people in the general public, that this type of technology was even available. This article was the spark that got everyone talking and the media wouldn’t let this story go. The rights to privacy and all of that came out in the last half of the 1996 year. Since a cookie privately stores information about an Internet user and tracks them online; the public and politicians were not too thrilled about this new cookie technology. Even though cookies had been around for more than a year and was already obtaining, recording, and tracking this information, the issues of privacy did come up.

Two hearings took place in 1996 and 1997 concerning cookies. These hearings were hosted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commissions group and not sure exactly what took place in these hearings or what the outcomes were. Since it is now 2010 and those hearings took place more than a decade ago, I believe it’s safe to assume the cookie technology would be allowed to live and thrive online.

Do you believe computer cookies are an invasion of privacy? These cookies have helped a lot of business-minded folks to collect a variety of information on computer users. They have been able to use this information and market certain products or services to people they believe would have an interest in it. The cookie technology has worked like a cash machine, for those that have tried to use the valuable information for financial gain. A lot of websites that use a “checkout” button or some form of “shopping cart” button use cookies to help consumers order multiple products and convenience on their return visits.

I like having some cookies for filling out screen names, passwords, and other data forms; which stays stored on my computer and prevents me from having to retype this information again. I don’t like the cookies that contain a lot of information and take away from our computer’s memory source. Using up too much memory can cause your computer to slow down and become sluggish. You have to go delete these cookies and free-up space, so you can gain speed again online. It really doesn’t matter if you love’em or hate’em; it appears they are here for the long run. People 100 years from now will still probably be asking the same question. Why the name cookie?

If we don’t have a clean colon, our body could be absorbing a lot of toxins and poisons into the blood stream and this could lead to some major health risks. Georgia Tech College located in Atlanta, Georgia currently has a contest underway. There is a lot of money at stake and perhaps a prize that’s worth more than the actual cash prizes of $15,000 and $10,000. This contest is for a patent and it’s for a person or persons that come up with the best invention. A lady living in Canton, Georgia is not going in solo and she does have a great team surrounding her. They will be hoping to get 15k for first prize and the 2nd prize of 10k isn’t too bad either.

What this team may want more than anything, is that patent from Georgia Tech on their new invention. It’s estimated to be worth about 20 grand, but a patent these days on a new invention, could mean a lot of money down the line. Especially if a company like Wal Mart, K Mart, or Target decide to carry your product in their stores. The royalties could really add up and these people could become millionaires.

First thing’s first though, they first must need to win this patent contest that Georgia Tech is hosting and this will take place on March 17th or this Wednesday. People living in Canton can cheer on their resident and her team on their new invention as this contest will be shown live on TV. You can watch it on PBS or Public Broadcasting Station and this will come on at 7 p.m. est.

So what did Nicole Miller from Canton and her team invent? They’re calling it the “Koozie Cooler” and this is a product designed to help our soft drinks and other beverages stay colder. Let the record show now, that my blog is the first ever to mention the Koozie Cooler and I fully support this new invention as being a new trademark for Canton, Georgia. First we have to win the contest, so everyone living in Canton and in Cherokee County, needs to tune in to PBS on March 17th at 7 in the evening, so we can root for Nicole Miller and her new invention. This wasn’t a hard decision 10 years ago; when a student or an adult decided to go back to school and complete a online degree. Things have changed a lot since then and there is probably an online university in just about every state now. The great thing about going to school online, is that geography really isn’t that important. It’s just as easy to choose a schooling program online in your own state; as it is for you to pick one in another state or on the other side of the country. I think this makes our education even better, by having so many choices a decade later.

Do you remember the bird flu? Some of us may have forgot about that with all the recent news we get on swine flu in the United States and in North America too. It’s a good thing this student (in picture above) from the online school University of Phoenix and her teachers didn’t. While this problem with bird flu is more associated with Asian countries than our own, you never know when the first bird flu case might pop up here in the U.S.. Well I’m not a parent currently but hope to be one someday. I guess it would help to get married first, right? I will certainly need to get with a woman that has a job and earns some type of income. It wasn’t the warmest of days for a groundhog to come out of his hole and give us a weather prediction for this year. However, the groundhog in Georgia known as the General Leebraved the 28 degree weather yesterday and did emerge for about 300 people that was wanting to get a glimpse at the famous furry creature. Other states have their own groundhog too, but we know the General Lee is the one we can trust and rely on.

The General Lee in Georgia did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day. What does this mean? It means that winter is coming to an end soon and the people in the Peach State and other parts of the South can expect a early spring. The Groundhog Days that do provide a shadow, means we have another 6 weeks of cold, winter weather ahead. Luckily this did not happen on Tuesday and the General Lee could not find his shadow anywhere. This is great news for those that don’t like winter weather and everyone can relax now, knowing that the days of spring are right around the corner. The General Lee has did his great work for this year and has made a lot of people happy. We won’t get to see the General Lee until February 2nd of 2011 and that will be when he makes his next weather prediction. Most of the other groundhogs agreed with the General Lee and most of the country is happy right now. It seems one groundhog didn’t get the memo and actually seen his shadow yesterday. The Pennsylvania groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow yesterday and people in Pennsylvania will have to keep the winter coats around for a bit longer. It seems the other groundhogs around the nation like Buckeye Chuck, Jimmy the Groundhog, and Staten Island Chuck agreed with the Georgia Groundhog General Lee and none of them seen their shadow either.  

Down in Macon, Georgia a news writer for Fox 24 in Macon, made one very observant notice about Groundhog Day. Celeste Smith from Fox 24 caught a glimpse of this week’s forecast and saw that a lot of rain would be taking place in Georgia later this week. Smith noted that the General Lee did not address that issue and it’s unclear how the groundhog from Georgia feels about the dreary weather forecasted for Georgia later on in the week. We may have to sit down with the groundhogs and see if they can start giving us a better idea on the weather conditions for the first week or two of February and see if we can milk a little bit more knowledge out of them. This could create problems and they may ask for pay raises and more holiday time and give meteorologists world-wide a lot more to do in their current jobs. As for this year in 2010, all we can say for sure is that the General Lee and other groundhogs are done forecasting and spring will be arriving shortly.

In other news today, we have learned that Pennsylvania is now searching for a new groundhog!

The students that are seniors in high school or in their senior year of college are now in the downhill portion of their educational life. Those in high school now have the opportunity to go to college; while the college graduates will be looking to join the work force in the real world. Before any of these students take their next steps in life, they will first have to make it to graduation day. This is an exciting time for the students and their parents. It’s taken a lot of hard work and effort to get to this point and everyone deserves a pat on the back. Now is a good time to start making preparations for that special graduation day; that will come in late spring or early summer. You will want to begin making a list, so you can invite all your close friends and relatives to witness this special occasion. The photo graduation invitations are usually the ones that get the best results, for those students that want a lot of support on their graduation day. A ceremony that has lots of friends and relatives attending are the most memorable ones. In case the student is not good at remembering, it is a good idea to bring the camera or video camera to record the graduation ceremony. No one ever totally forgets this day, but it’s really special when they can look at it years later and see exactly how their special day went. The camcorder and invitations is only the beginning of everything you will want to have in place as the big day draws closer. That’s why sitting down now and making a list of everything the student and parents will need this year, is the best way to insure a happy day.
