It seems Halloween is not really a holiday we celebrate for 24 hours. We may spend days getting ready for Halloween with costume shopping, decorations, baking goods, and buying all of that candy. I figure Halloween is actually a 2 hour holiday we spend each year. If you take into consideration that most parents take their kids trick-or-treating one hour before it gets dark and spend 1 hour after dark going door to door looking for candy; then the whole Halloween festivities last for about 2 hours in most cases. This year Halloween will fall on a Saturday. This is great for everyone and especially the kids that want to stay out late trick-or-treating or just rolling someone’s yard in toilet paper. I do enjoy getting out on November 1st and seeing the different houses that got rolled over night. Some home owners actually encourage some kids to roll their yards, so their house can be the one with the extra toilet paper on November 1st. There is an art form to rolling someone’s house in toilet paper. You need a few bigger kids or some guys that play sports. If one of your friends is a pitcher on his baseball team or the quarterback for the local high school football team, then you got a good friend for rolling yards. Someone with a strong arm can launch the toilet paper high into the trees and this looks good the next morning; when the sun comes up. Just remember you need to undo some of the paper, cause it can be a little sticky getting the paper to roll off the roll for the first time. Once you get the toilet paper where it will roll off real easy, that’s when you want to hand it to the quarterback or baseball pitcher in the crowd and let him throw it high in a big tree.

If you get people that can’t really launch the toilet paper; then you will have a rolling job like the one in the picture. See how the tops of the trees are left untouched? This is because you had kids with weak arms or a lot of girls doing this toilet paper rolling job. You can prevent this by getting that guy with the super strong arm to launch a few rolls for you. The lower limbs need to be covered too, but make sure you get a couple of rolls high up in the tree, so you can still see some toilet paper around Thanksgiving. If you can still see toilet paper when you sit down to eat turkey and dressing; then you did a good job with your TP rolling efforts. Always keep safety in mind for your Halloween toilet paper rolling jobs and everyone can wake up the next morning with a good laugh from your hard Halloween night efforts. How many times do we plan a camping trip in the middle of summer, where the temperatures are hot and we spend more time away from the campfire than near it? Instead of dodging the campfire for excess heat, wouldn’t it be nice to use a campfire for warmth? We only light the summer campfires so we can roast our marshmallows and hot dogs. Perhaps a few campers use it for a source of light at night, but the summer campfires can be more of a hassle than a pleasure.

A winter camping trip would be all about the campfire. I have been out in the woods at night with very cold temperatures and you can’t get close enough to that campfire. This is when camping can be a lot of fun. If you have to use your campfire for warmth, you have planned the perfect night for camping!

Now winter camping trips in a camper don’t count. You have to sleep in a tent or a sleeping bag on the ground. A camper is cheating in my book, but if you do plan a winter camping trip in your motor home, make sure you got some good rv insurance. Some of the steep roads going to campground areas can be a nightmare in the winter time and especially if a little rain or snow starts to form ice on the roadways. It can quickly become a dangerous situation and don’t think the heavy weight of an RV will keep you from sliding off the road. You see the big 18 wheeler trucks wrecking all the time and no vehicle is prone to icy roads. Save your big fancy camper for the summer time and leave the winter camping to those that brave nature’s cold nights in tents.

You can still pack the hot dogs and marshmallows for roasting on the fire. Everyone will want to be the chef on winter camping trips. It’s just another excuse to get closer to the campfire. A bag of charcoal and the grill is fine to bring along. I prefer a good grilled hamburger over a hot dog, so grills are allowed on camping trips. The portable things that run off batteries should be kept at home, so you get a better experience with Mother Nature. If you don’t have a lot of talkers in your camping party, you may want to bring a radio for a little entertainment. Only a radio that everyone can listen to, this doesn’t mean the IPods, the Walkmans, or any portable televisions you may own.

One luxury item is allowed for a camping trip and the radio without earphones is your one luxury item. If you start allowing too many luxury items, it spoils what a camping trip is meant for. I know everyone has their own definition, but the more rugged it is, the better you will appreciate the modern things we get to use everyday. That pillow on your bed and your soft mattress gets taken for granted daily. Now try sleeping without them for one night and you will understand how lucky we are to have beds and pillows. Now go get with your friends and plan out a camping trip for this December or January. Be safe out there and make sure to pack more than you would for a summer camping trip.

The DOW was down more than 100 points today and Best Buy still manage to gain ground with a .22 cent increase per share. You can buy shares of Best Buy for $39.39 right now. Look for this stock to split around the $60 to $70  level. The holidays are fast approaching and lots will be shopping at Best Buy this year for all their popular electronics they offer.

McDonalds will see an increase as the holidays get closer too. People will spend their days shopping and won’t feel like cooking at home, so they will stop at McDonalds for some cheap fast food. McDonalds shares were down a little today, but you can buy a share of McDonalds stock at $59.20 right now. A stock split for McDonalds could happen in the $80 to $90 range.

If you can only pick one stock, then you will have a tough choice between Best Buy and McDonalds. It just depends if you have a greater interest in Ronald McDonald or the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I will continue to monitor both of these stocks and see how they fare against each other and the retail stocks they compete against in fast food and electronics.

It’s true, you can buy furniture online and it’s not as hard as you think it might be. Online furniture companies are ready to ship their furniture to your door in a quick and safe way, so no damage gets done in the shipping process. Even after you calculate the extra costs for shipping; you may still be able to find furniture online cheaper than going to a furniture store in your local area. Don’t over look the places online when you get ready to buy some new furniture for your home.

My Love for the “L” Sofas

I have always had a love for a “L” couch or more commonly known as the corner sofa. I’m from the South, so I say “couch” over “sofa” and use the letter “L” over “corner” in my descriptions, but you get my drift, right? Well I don’t think there is anything in the world that looks more comfy than a L couch or corner sofa. I love the way they take up a living room and the number of people that can sit on a corner sofa. My family has never owned one, but I would like to buy this piece of furniture one day. It doesn’t have to be in Italian Leather like the one in the picture; a cloth corner sofa would be fine with me. I have always been jealous of those that had one of these couches in their home. It must be nice to lay down and take a nap on one of these awesome sofas. You have enough room to sleep on it; while 1 or 2 other people could be sitting on it and watching TV or something. You really don’t have that luxury with a standard sofa or straight couch. One day I will have the room and the money to get one of these corner sofas and I will check online before I run out and buy one.

We are lucky that buying and selling things online is legal. Shopping from your computer or just browsing at items you would like to buy is really convenient. People that are picky with their taste, can shop online and look at as many things as they want to; until they find the right item they want to buy. Furniture is a perfect example of this. How much driving and walking would you have to do, if you were in the market for a new living room suit or bedroom suit for your home? Browsing through the 1000’s of items online for your home furnishings; insures you will find the exact piece of furniture you want and at the best price possible. There is no doubt I will be getting me an “L” couch or corner sofa one day and I will find the exact one I want online before I buy it.

No dispute with the South in the top 2 positions of the college football rankings. Florida and Alabama are great choices for the top 2 spots in the country and they stand alone in college football. The Texas Longhorns is a weak choice at 3 with their light schedule and unimpressive win margins against weaker teams. They are several other undefeated teams in the top 10 in college football that don’t have any real competition. It seems the polls don’t mind them jumping good 1 loss teams, as long as that one loss team isn’t the USC Trojans. It gets old every year seeing USC ranking way too high in the polls. They play in a weak Pac 10 and still can’t manage to win all of their games. I’m not going to bother with the small schools sporting perfect records. This is about the USC football program versing the southern teams in college football and how the money in Southern California is wrecking the landscape of college football.

You can focus on 3 one loss teams to see just how much disrespect there is for the South in college football. The LSU Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets both should be ranked above the USC Trojans. All 3 teams have one loss. The Tigers from Louisiana got beat by the number 1 team in the country (Florida) and it’s their only loss on the season. The GT Yellow Jackets loss to a undefeated Miami Hurricane team at the time; which after this past weekend, they got their 2nd loss of the season with a overtime loss against Clemson. Who did USC lose to? They got beat by a Washington Huskies team that didn’t even win a football game last year. Washington has manage to win 3 games this year, but have still lost 5 football games this year. How does opponents with zero and two losses rank higher than one with 5 losses?  There is no way in the world why USC should be ranked 5th in the BCS and ranked 4th in the other two polls! Knock, knock, is there anyone home? How do you have a team ranked 5th, 4th, and 4th in the country; when they got beat by a team that didn’t win 1 single football game last year and have 5 losses this year?

Last week USC was ranked 7th in the BCS Standings. This week they move up two spots in the rankings with a 6 point win at home over an unranked Oregon State team. Georgia Tech managed to move up 1 spot (12th to 11th) with a road victory over Virginia where they beat them by 25 points and held Virginia’s offense to only 9 points; while Oregon State posted 36 points against the 5th ranked USC Trojans! No one lost in front of USC’s position in the rankings; while Georgia Tech had Miami lose in front of them. A team that loses is an automatic bid for a drop in the polls, so Georgia Tech only got the 1 spot that was handed to them by a Miami loss. USC got handed 2 spots and no teams lost, they played at home, and barely won the game! In a weekend that favored Georgia Tech in any way you choose to look at it (home or away; margin of victory, etc..), the Yellow Jackets clearly deserved more support in a move up, but USC still beat them in the bias ranking game by moving up 2 spots to Georgia Tech’s 1 spot.

Oh don’t forget about the LSU Tigers either! They did have a home game like USC did this past weekend, but they beat the Auburn Tigers by 21 points and only allowed Auburn to score 10 points for the game. For their reward of beating Auburn they got nothing in the BCS Rankings! The BCS Rankings just awarded USC two spots in their precious poll for winning a home game by 6 points against an unranked Pac 10 Team. While Georgia Tech and Auburn combined moved up 1 spot with both of their opponents combined putting up 19 points; versing the 36 points allowed by the over ranked USC defense. It wouldn’t even be a fair match up to put this Southern California team against LSU or Georgia Tech. This would be an easy 2 touchdown win for the Tigers or Yellow Jackets and they could even play the game at the Coliseum. I’m being very kind to say “2 touchdown”, I really don’t think it would even be that close.

If you’re an LSU Tigers fan, player, or coach and you’re mad with the BCS Rankings; then you should be! Not at the small schools that have perfect records to this point. Your anger should be directed at the USC Trojans for having the same record as you, but your loss was to a 0 loss team and USC was to a 5 loss team and the same team that beat USC this year, is the same team you beat on the road this year in Washington. Only way for USC to be ranked higher than LSU right now would have to do with corruption and the fact USC has the richest college program in the country. USC is under investigations by the NCAA and suspensions will be coming; due to the fact they paid Reggie Bush’s family money. Future recruits coming out of high school should avoid USC; since the chances of a bowl game suspension is very possible in Southern California.

Sorry Oregon, your 1 loss was to Boise State and your home game against Purdue you only won by 2 points and Purdue manage to beat the over ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Only reason you have a top 10 ranking in the BCS is because USC needs this to help them. Pac 10 teams are over ranked in general with Notre Dame and Ohio State over ranked based on popularity and opponents of the USC Trojans.

A TV show that has withstood the test of time over the last 7 years has been the Gilmore Girls. It originally came on the WB Network and it’s debut was in 2000. The 7th season was completed in 2007 and I’m not sure if there is an 8th season of the Gilmore Girls or not? I ran across the 6th season of the Gilmore Girls at Buy.com, which they are currently selling for about $25 (cheap). I’m not sure if you’re a fan of the show or not, but I have watched a few episodes here and there. It is a pretty good program and I can understand why so many people like to watch the Gilmore Girls.

Now did you think the Gilmore Girls were sisters? Are you aware of their relationship and how they know each other? If you just tuned in and starting watching the Gilmore Girls, you would think they’re are sisters, neighbors, or just best friends. Actually it is a mother and daughter relationship they have, but it’s not the typical mother and daughter relationship. They do act like they are sisters and it could be a little confusing for someone that hasn’t never seen the show before.

The mother is Lorelai Gilmore who is played by actress Lauren Graham. Alexis Bledel is the one who plays the daughter named Rory on the Gilmore Girls. Rory Gilmore is the main focus and it’s her character that the show revolves around. You probably know this already if you have watched an episode or two of the Gilmore Girls.

I was aware that they did do a 7th season of the show, but I don’t know if they did an 8th season? Perhaps you can reply and let me know if you know the answer to any future seasons of the Gilmore Girls. Most TV shows fail in their first year or have trouble keeping a fan base beyond the original season. If a TV show is able to stay on the air for 3 seasons; then chances are they have something working for them. The Gilmore Girls doing at least 7 seasons shows that the magic between Lorelai and Rory is working and people want to see what this mom and daughter are up to. It is a clean show based on today’s standards. A few adult or grown-up moments do take place as we’re watching Rory grow up, but it’s done in a tasteful and parent approving way. Any parents that let their kids or teens watch the Simpsons or MTV would have no problems with them watching the Gilmore Girls.

So if you wasn’t aware of these two being a mom (Lorelai) and daughter (Rory) now you know. The Gilmore Girls are not sisters, but they do act like sisters or best friends on the show. You can buy the Gilmore Girls season by season online. You should be able to find a good sale on their first 6 seasons. The 7th season might be a little too high to buy right now, but if you don’t mind waiting, you should be able to pick it up pretty cheap in a year or two from now. Don’t forget to let me know if there is a season 8 for the Gilmore Girls.

We get in trouble, we call 9-1-1, right? Well the person at the other end may not be willing to help, if it’s a computer emergency. Even though it may be an emergency to us, they’re not going to care about our computers as much as we do. For computer emergencies we all need a “computer guy”. I have a guy and I’m sure lots more are out there with their own guys too. Our computer guy isn’t going to be much help if we wipe our systems clean or accidentally delete everything. The computer guys need something to work with or a point where they can restore things. This is one of the reasons why we need to use a online backup system. If we have the “nuts & bolts” of our computer systems in some back up capacity, it’s relatively easy to get the computer back up and working again.

Now there are bugs and sudden power outages that can cause havoc with our computers too. Sometimes a sudden power outage may cause us to lose some important documents, files, or pictures we had saved or stored on our computers. It’s a good idea to back up anything that you want to keep or would be lost without it. We may have a picture on our computer now and it’s the only copy we have. This is a good example of something that would need to be stored in another offline location or backed up on a file or disk. Learning how to back up our information online is a good way of preventing those 9-1-1 calls to our computer guy!

We all know what vowels are right? The “a”, “e”, “i”, “o”, and “u” letters in the alphabet. It’s hard to find words that don’t have vowels in them. Sometimes we include the “y” as part of a vowel. You often hear our vowels are “a,e,i,o,u, and sometimes y”. For those that like to play Scrabble, knowing what words don’t contain a vowel can be very important. If you’re stuck with no vowels in Scrabble; then I sure hope you have a “y” as one of your letters. The “y” can help you spell many words.

When I was younger, I would try to think of words that didn’t have a vowel in them. I finally discovered that “sky” didn’t have a true vowel in it and figured it was probably the only word in the world with no vowels in it. Well I was wrong and there is actually a lot of words that don’t have a vowel in them. How many words do you know with no vowels? Thanks to a recent discussion on Yahoo, I can now give you a pretty good list of words with no vowels in them. According to one person, the word “cwm” is a real word and one that you could use in Scrabble. Well you know how the old saying goes “you learn something new everyday“; well I did learn something new today. I did not know that laptop computers had their own special desks. I was trying to see if I could find a sale going on and I came across one of these laptop desks. It’s an adjustable desk and it also offers some extra desk space to the side.

I don’t currently own a laptop computer, but I think I would want this desk if I did own one. I have seen several reports where laying a laptop on your lap is a bad thing. Apparently the batteries or something inside the laptop creates a lot of heat and this heat is bad for the body. I’m not sure how it affects women, but I know men shouldn’t use a laptop on their laps or upper legs. The name laptop does suggest we would just lay them on our laps, but new studies are showing that this is a bad idea.

You can prevent this problem, if you had one of these adjustable laptop desks. Judging by the picture, it doesn’t look like they would take up much room. It would be far smaller for the computer users that have their desktop computers on a desk. Laptops are smaller, so you don’t need the extra desk space with them. You couldn’t carry your desk around of coarse, but for home use, one of these laptop desks would be perfect!

I wasn’t aware that laptop desks even existed. I’m not sure if these are new to the marketplace or I am just behind on the times. It’s probably a little of both on why I haven’t ever seen one before. A desk like this is cheaper than your standard office desks. If you’re a male and use a laptop computer often, then I would consider getting one of these. You may be risking your health if you’re placing the laptop on your legs in any type of manner. A desk like this would prevent that and it’s probably easier to type on a laptop with a good, sturdy surface.

I was looking at the top 10 searches at Yahoo and noticed that “pumpkin carving patterns” is the number 1 thing being searched right now. I don’t have any cool pumpkin patterns to give you, but I would like to know about your pumpkin carving traditions at your house. Is there any special process on buying your pumpkin for Halloween? It looks like a fun trip for the whole family; if you go to a pumpkin farm to buy your own special pumpkin. Or is the pumpkins in the supermarket just as good?

As much as I love Halloween and all the things associated with it, like getting candy, dressing up in costumes, and watching scary movies on TV, I have never carved a pumpkin before. I’m not a good artist, so I know my jack-o-lantern would not turn out good, but would still like to do it one day. I would need some pumpkin carving tips, because I wouldn’t know where to start.

I know the kids would have a good time carving up a pumpkin for Halloween. This can be a great family activity that everyone would have a good time doing and really pumpkins don’t cost that much. A cheap pumpkin would be just fine for the younger folks.

Pumpkin Carving Patterns

Do you see a pumpkin carving pattern in this picture that you like? Someone is very talented with their carving skills to make these pumpkins look so awesome. I’m amazed at how people can create pumpkin designs like the ones you see in this picture. Which pumpkin pattern do you like the best? I like the 4th one from the left on the 1st row (cat with witches hat). I think that one is pretty cool and if you go to the 2nd row in the picture, I like the 2nd one from the left (Frankenstein design). It looks like a kid Frankenstein and it’s a very creative pumpkin design. Just the ability to spell words on some of these pumpkins takes a lot of talent. I think the words look good and it probably takes some time to get the letters just right on the pumpkins that spell words.

Do you plan to carve out a pumpkin for this year? We don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters at my house, but the people that live in neighborhoods, should have a carved-out pumpkin sitting on the porch with a candle inside. As the flame twinkles up and down in the Halloween night, it seems the fire gives life to these pumpkins. If you don’t put a candle in your pumpkin; then it does take away from the personality of your pumpkin. If your going to take the time to carve-in a nice design, you might as well throw a candle inside to give it that finishing touch.

Halloween will be here next Saturday, so this is really the last weekend to make a trip to the pumpkin farm. Load up the kids sometime this weekend and go find your family’s special pumpkin. When you get home, get everyone involved with the carving and see which family member does the best with their pumpkin. Don’t forget to buy a few candles, so you can give your pumpkin a bit of life. Remember to have fun this Halloween, don’t eat too much candy, and safety always comes first! Happy Halloween!
